Great Pumpkin Ride

Fall is definitely in full swing and the temperature at the start of this ride certainly proved it. It was in the high 20s when we arrived at the start and perhaps around freezing when we started rolling. After a few miles, the toes warmed up and I was toasty all over. The knee continued to cause me distress when climbing, even on the little rollers on this ride, which had only a couple of real "hills" in it. I was able to fight my way through it but I'm thinking that tomorrow's VeloDCity Ramble is better left undone as I'm sure the knee will still be sore. This is getting old (as am I). But otherwise, a beautiful and enjoyable ride.

NOVA-CBG Nokesville Ride

So, the day after the first ride with the new Garmin 810 didn't go any better and, in fact, was worse than the first time. Still have two "rides" since I noticed a few miles in that my bike profiles went "poof" and disappeared for my most used bikes and the cadence sensor wasn't registering. Plus, I was still tired from yesterday's sloggy, cold, hill-climbing ride and my knees were still very painful. Did not make for a very efficient or effective ride. Oh, and I was late too so I was trying to keep up (didn't work) and then navigate sans cue sheet. Yeah, a bit of a cluster. Luckily, the gang was very, very, very accommodating and the after-ride was quite enjoyable. Needless to say, I'll be making an appointment with the orthopedic surgeon forthwith. But other than that, it was a great day! ;)

Best Buddies Metric

First ride with the new Garmin 810 and had some operator error, hence the ride upload in two parts. The first part covers from the start to the first rest stop in Waterford and the second part covers the rest. Hopefully, I'll be a bit more adept at using the new Gamin on the next ride.

But back to this ride: it was friggin' COLD out there and it only got colder the closer to the VA piedmont we got. I'm glad I made the last minute decision to wear my knickers instead of regular bike bibs. It made all the difference in the world. I could've even gone with full length bibs and not have gotten overheated. And I survived all of the hills in upper Montgomery County/southern Frederick County MD as well as those nasty things on the VA side in Waterford, Lovettsville, et al. It was also nice running into Mike and Jason from FreshBikes, and Haider and friends from VeloDCity.

To be honest, the shutdown aborted full English Century conversion to the Metric Century really wasn't so bad after all with the cold and not nice weather today. I can only imagine how cold I would've been on the first 40 miles out of DC at 6:30am this morning. The 9am start in Poolesville wasn't so bad and a tad bit warmer, I suspect. All in all, a good ride.

Team KAM Post-Sea Gull Recovery Ride

I desperately needed to spin the legs out after yesterday's epic Sea Gull Century so I was able to wrangle Mary and Andrea and we three--Team KAM--set out for a nice easy spin down to Jones Point with a stop at Ben & Jerry's on the way back. Yummy banana split! And no guilt! Back to the grind tomorrow.

2013 Sea Gull Century - Assateague Route

OMG, what an absolutely, fantastic, out-of-this-world, incredible, friggin' bike ride. This was assuredly my best ride...EVER. My ever faithful wing man, Tim, rode the whole course with me. I can't believe that I actually DROPPED Tim several times over the first 43 miles, where I pulled us between 18 and 22 mph. We shared the next 20 or rode next to one another, and then Tim got his revenge and got to drop me a few times as we completed the last 40 miles. I killed it with a 17.3 mph average speed with 17.4 rolling, increasing my average by almost 3 mph over last year. And the weather was perfect: very little wind, no rain, sunny, and incredibly warm, hot even. I am soooooo, soooooooo happy with this performance. I can't wait for next year's ride.
